An Old Railroad Town With Old Shop Doors
St. Clair started in the 1840s as a stagecoach stop called Traveler’s Repose. The name changed when the railroad arrived in 1859, and the town grew as a shipping point for lead, iron ore, lumber and farm goods. Later came Route 66, and in 1922 the International Shoe Company, whose old factory building is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
That history is still in the doors. Many downtown buildings have narrow aluminium or wooden shop doors with mortise locks, hook bolts and cylinders that have been through several owners. Often nobody knows who holds the old keys, and replacement parts have to be matched carefully because the door is too narrow for a standard modern lock.
