An Old Railroad Town With Old Shop Doors
St. Clair started in the 1840s as a stagecoach stop called Traveler’s Repose. The name changed when the railroad arrived in 1859, and the town grew as a shipping point for lead, iron ore, lumber, and farm goods. Later came Route 66, and in 1922 the International Shoe Company opened its factory, whose old building is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
That history is still in the doors. A lot of the buildings in the downtown area have very narrow shop doors (aluminium or wooden) with mortise locks, hook bolts, and cylinders that have gone through several hands. Quite often no-one knows who has the old keys and you have to be very careful about matching the replacement parts as the door is too narrow for a standard modern lock.
If you have taken over a shop or office in town, we suggest rekeying the front and back doors before anything else. It is quick, it keeps the lock that fits your door, and it means only your staff can get in.
What We Do in St. Clair
Residential Locksmith Services
Rekeying
When the locks are sound, rekeying will change the key so that the old keys won’t work. That’s the right first step when you buy a house or take over a shop and we can rekey several doors on one key.
Lock Changes and New Hardware
Worn or broken locks are replaced. We’ll measure the door first to ensure the new lock fits. More on changing house locks. If the door has dropped or the latch no longer lines up then repair and adjustment is normally far cheaper than a new lock.
Keypad and Smart Locks
A code is useful for rentals, for staff who are starting early and for family who want to be able to let themselves in. We check the door thickness, backset and bore before we order anything. More on fitting keypad locks.
Commercial Locksmith Services
Storefront and Business Locks
We do shop doors, rear doors and office doors (including the narrow frame doors that are so common in older buildings). We can rekey, repair or replace the lock and we can come either before you open or after you’ve closed. More on business locks.
Emergency Locksmith Services
Lockouts
House, apartment, shop, op or office? Just give us the address and let us know what type of lock is on the door. We’ll open it properly rather than just drilling out a lock that was perfectly serviceable. More on getting back in.
Car Door Unlocking
Any car doors that were locked in the car at a fuel stop off I-44 or outside your house? We can open the door. That’s the only vehicle work we do. Nothing to do with key cutting, nothing to do with fob programming and nothing to do with the ignition. More on car door unlocking.
Explore our services: getting back in, rekeying, business locks, house lock changes, repairs and adjustments, keypad lock installation, and car door unlocking.
Between Two Rivers
St. Clair is situated between the Meramec River to the southeast and the Bourbeuse River to the northwest. If a door sticks or the latch no longer lines up, we check the door, hinges, and strike before recommending any lock repair or replacement.

Getting Out To You
Our base is in Ballwin, so St. Clair is a bit of a longer run down I-44 than most of our other towns. We’re upfront about the drive when you call. If you have more than one job (say, a lockout today and a rekey you’ve been putting off), let us know, and we’ll do both in one trip.
Union is six miles north on Route 47, and Villa Ridge, Washington, and Pacific are all within easy reach. We list every town we cover on our service areas page.
We don’t have a St. Clair shop; we come to the property. Our techs are fully licensed and insured and have over 11 years of combined local experience. We’re open every day from 8am to 10pm.
St. Clair Locksmith Questions
Do you actually come out as far as St. Clair?
Yes, it’s a longer drive from Ballwin than most towns, so just ring (636) 628-7803, and we’ll give you an honest arrival time before we leave.
Can you look at the old shop doors downtown?
Yes. Many older shop doors are too narrow for a standard lock,, so we’ll match the mortise lock or cylinder to the door. A rekey is often all that’s required, which keeps the lock appropriate for the door.
I’ve just taken over a shop. What do I do first?
Rekey the front and back doors. You have no idea how many keys the previous owner may have given out. A rekey will stop all of them working in one go.
Our door’s been sticking since the downpour. Is it the lock?
It’s often the door, not the lock. The frame can swell, and the latch will simply stop aligning. We check the door and frame first and only replace the lock if it’s actually damaged.
Can you do several jobs in one visit?
Yes, and out here it makes sense. Tell us everything you need when you call, and we will bring the parts so we can finish it in one trip.
